When BMW introduced the Touring in 1971, it was ahead of its time: a sporty coupé estate with a large tailgate – as practical as a wagon, as elegant and agile as a coupé. Bold, versatile, and committed to sheer driving pleasure, it remained something of an insider's secret. Barely 30,000 units were produced until 1974, before BMW discontinued the model. Today it is considered a rarity – a seldom-seen chapter of BMW history known only to a few enthusiasts.
One of them was an Alpina works driver, who acquired a 2000 ti Touring directly in Buchloe in 1973. Years later, in 1987, he decided to breathe new life into his Touring – with the help of the very people and parts that had made Alpina famous. Step by step, a car emerged that had never officially existed, but which carried Alpina DNA in every fiber.
As part of this refinement, the Touring received a fresh 2-liter replacement engine from BMW, brought to perfection with original Alpina components. Equipped with the legendary A1 carburetor system, it gained that unmistakable character that only Buchloe could create: immediate throttle response, a willingness to rev to the highest regions, and the smoothness of fine mechanical precision. Crowned by an Abarth sports exhaust system, whose deep, resonant voice made every kilometer an experience, and paired with a 5-speed sports gearbox, this drivetrain combined power, dynamics, pure emotion, and a unique sound – a mechanical masterpiece that transformed the Touring into a true driver's car.
But that was not all: the chassis was reworked in Alpina fashion, the brakes reinforced, and even the interior was given special attention. The sports seats and rear bench were reupholstered in original Alpina fabric, complemented by the typical VDO auxiliary instruments and the classic Alpina steering wheel, which is still regarded as the embodiment of sporting elegance today.
On the outside, the car features an original Alpina front spoiler, flanked by the characteristic Alpina alloy wheels that complete its sporty silhouette. Additional presence was provided by a Zender wide-body kit – originally designed for the BMW 02 saloon – painstakingly adapted to the Touring's body. And as a charming detail, this Touring even boasts a rear wiper – a feature never officially available, but which seems tailor-made for a car that so perfectly blends sportiness with everyday usability.
Thus emerged a 2000 ti Touring A1 that is more than a conversion: it is the expression of a works driver's passion, forged with original parts, expertise, and dedication. A car that never officially existed – yet one that Alpina itself could hardly have designed better.
The crowning moment: at Alpina's 50th anniversary celebration, this very Touring was awarded “Best of Show” by the jury. Ordered by its first and only owner in January 1973, this car was delivered by Alpina Bovensiepen on March 21, 1973, and registered on March 29, 1973, through the company of the then Alpina works driver. Finished in its original Colorado paintwork (Code 002), the Touring began its journey. On December 17, 1975, it was re-registered to the owner's private address – and since then has remained in the same hands for over 50 years without interruption.
In 1987, the car underwent a comprehensive restoration, during which it was simultaneously upgraded to Alpina A1 2000 ti specification. Since then, it has covered only around 40,000 km, bringing the total mileage today to approx. 140,000 km. From then on, it was used exclusively for classic car events and gatherings, always meticulously cared for and preserved with thorough cavity sealing and careful maintenance.
The Touring originates from an important BMW and Alpina collection. A photographic record of the restoration as well as numerous documents and receipts from five decades accompany its history. As a special highlight, the “Best of Show” trophy from Alpina's 50th anniversary celebration is also included.
Today the car has German registration papers and presents itself in an exceptionally fresh condition – a unique piece of BMW and Alpina history that unites continuity, authenticity, and passion.

Lorsque BMW présenta la Touring en 1971, elle était en avance sur son temps : un coupé break sportif doté d'un grand hayon – aussi pratique qu'un break, aussi élégant et agile qu'un coupé. Audacieuse, polyvalente et néanmoins fidèle au plaisir de conduire, elle resta longtemps un secret bien gardé. À peine 30 000 exemplaires furent produits jusqu'en 1974, avant que BMW n'interrompe la fabrication. Aujourd'hui, elle est considérée comme une rareté – un chapitre méconnu de l'histoire de BMW que seuls quelques passionnés ont eu la chance de découvrir.
L'un d'eux était un pilote officiel Alpina, qui acquit en 1973 une 2000 ti Touring directement à Buchloe. Des années plus tard, en 1987, il décida de redonner une nouvelle âme à sa Touring – avec l'aide de ceux qui avaient fait la réputation d'Alpina et grâce aux pièces originales. Pas à pas, naquit une voiture qui n'avait jamais existé officiellement, mais qui respirait l'ADN Alpina dans chacune de ses fibres.
Dans le cadre de cette transformation, la Touring reçut un moteur de remplacement BMW 2 litres flambant neuf, sublimé par des composants Alpina d'origine. Équipée du légendaire système de carburateurs A1, elle retrouva ce caractère inimitable que seul Buchloe savait insuffler : une réponse immédiate, une joie de monter dans les tours jusqu'aux plus hauts régimes et une douceur de fonctionnement digne d'une mécanique de précision. Couronné par une ligne d'échappement sportive Abarth, dont la voix grave et résonante transformait chaque kilomètre en expérience, et associé à une boîte de vitesses sport à 5 rapports, ce groupe motopropulseur réunissait puissance, dynamisme, émotion pure et une sonorité unique – un chef-d'œuvre mécanique qui fit de la Touring une véritable voiture de conducteur.
Mais ce n'était pas tout : le châssis fut retravaillé à la manière d'Alpina, les freins renforcés, et même l'habitacle reçut une attention particulière. Les sièges sport et la banquette arrière furent regarnis de tissus Alpina d'origine, complétés par les instruments additionnels VDO caractéristiques et le volant Alpina classique, encore considéré aujourd'hui comme l'incarnation de l'élégance sportive.
À l'extérieur, la voiture se distingue par un spoiler avant Alpina d'origine, flanqué des jantes alliage Alpina emblématiques qui parachèvent sa silhouette sportive. Une extension de carrosserie Zender – initialement conçue pour la berline BMW 02 – fut adaptée avec soin à la carrosserie de la Touring, lui conférant une présence supplémentaire. Et comme détail charmant, cette Touring possède même un essuie-glace arrière – un équipement jamais proposé officiellement, mais qui semble fait sur mesure pour un véhicule combinant sportivité et praticité au quotidien.
C'est ainsi qu'est née une 2000 ti Touring A1 qui est bien plus qu'une transformation : l'expression de la passion d'un pilote Alpina, forgée avec des pièces d'origine, un savoir-faire expert et un véritable engagement. Une voiture qui n'existait pas officiellement – mais qu'Alpina elle-même n'aurait guère pu mieux concevoir.

Le 17 décembre 1975, elle fut réimmatriculée à l'adresse privée du propriétaire – et depuis plus de 50 ans, elle est restée sans interruption dans les mêmes mains.
En 1987, le véhicule fit l'objet d'une restauration complète, au cours de laquelle il fut transformé en Alpina A1 2000 ti. Depuis lors, il n'a parcouru qu'environ 40 000 km, portant son kilométrage total à env. 140 000 km aujourd'hui. Il fut ensuite utilisé exclusivement lors de manifestations et de rassemblements de véhicules anciens, toujours soigneusement entretenu et préservé grâce à un traitement anticorrosion et un entretien méticuleux.
La Touring provient d'une importante collection BMW et Alpina. Une documentation photographique de la restauration ainsi que de nombreux documents et factures sur cinq décennies accompagnent son histoire. Comme point fort, le trophée « Best of Show » de la célébration des 50 ans d'Alpina est également inclus.
Aujourd'hui, le véhicule dispose de papiers d'immatriculation allemands et se présente dans un état exceptionnellement frais – une pièce unique de l'histoire BMW et Alpina, qui incarne continuité, authenticité et passion.
